There are two competing editors in the *nix world: vi and Emacs. They look simple, but they are really mighty. And they have a reputation of being overly complex and unusable for non-nerds.
Currently I am using vi most of the time, but that’s just because I am playing with equipment that is running BusyBox now and then. I guess you are not surprised that I am telling you that using vi is not very hard.

I tried the release candidate of Ubuntus latest version this weekend.
And I’m deeply impressed – it’s the very first time that I had a Linux version that worked just out of the box. Video drivers, mouse, even WLAN. The UI is just nice to look at, work with and intuitive.
Ubuntu 8.10 final will be released on November 1, 2008. Check ubuntu.com for more details.

If you are running Vista or Mac OS X 10.5 / Leopard, you might have noticed that accessing files on Samba shares over your corporate network is dreadfully slow. Note that I’m not talking about network as in “my 10mbit Ethernet at home”, but as in “those strange fiber optic thingies running to my computer” (even though the problem occurs on slower networks as well).
But why is Samba such a pain suddenly?
